Zakat Eligibility

Student Selection

All students who apply for the need-based scholarships are required to fill out a detailed financial aid form. Through this form, the students share all documents that highlight their financial situation. Each piece of information provided by the students is thoroughly checked and verified by an independent resource. Once the student has been confirmed to be truly deserving they are approved to receive financial aid. There is no priority list when it comes to need-based scholarships. All students who need scholarships (i.e. who are deserving of scholarships) are offered it in the form of a tuition fee waiver. No deserving student is ever denied a scholarship. Special cases involving orphans and disabled students are certainly marked for special review by the financial support committee (FSC).

Verification of Eligible Students for Zakat

Students who apply for need-based scholarships to Namal, check a box of whether Zakat is applicable or not. All documents/forms submitted by students applying for need-based scholarships are verified by a third party appointed by the Namal Education Foundation through a meticulous procurement procedure, which includes the participation of at least three smaller service providers. The chosen third-party entity possesses an outstanding track record and provides its services at a reasonable cost. The purpose of the third-party verification (TPV) is to review and confirm the veracity of the information provided by the students. Physical verification is also made wherein a team member from the third party pays a visit to each students home. They are tasked to make observations and interview the students and their families and also confirm from the neighborhood. They make a special effort to note down the number of vehicles in possession, the kind of house they are occupying, land for agriculture purposes or for any other activity, animals they have, and possession of other movable and immovable assets. The team member then reports these findings to the Namal Education Foundation. All discrepancies, if any, are identified and communicated with the students and appropriate action is taken against them.
There are no exact metrics that determine the Zakat eligibility. Every case is treated differently to determine the financial status. The metrics commonly used are as follows:
  • Income over expenses
  • Cost of education minus expected family contribution
  • The value of assets in possession by the family
  • Special considerations such as disability, death of family member, etc.
